Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility Mail Procedures

 

 

 The following are general mail rules:

  1. All incoming mail will be inspected
  2. Mail is processed and distributed Monday through Friday excluding Holidays
  3. Inmates may receive incoming mail, sealed letters from family and friends, groups of persons and organizations, including, but not limited to the following:
    1. Courts, counsel, officials of the jail, government officials, administrators of the grievance systems, medical officials and members of the parole authority.
  4. Non Legal envelopes over 8” (inches) x 10” (inches), packages, boxes and other similar items are considered parcels will not be accepted without pre-approval.

 Mail will not be accepted under the following conditions:

  1. Mail containing;
    1. Polaroid’s
    2. Photos or pictures over 4” x 6”
    3. Stationary
    4. Any food items
    5. Any type of contraband
    6. Infectious/hazardous materials
    7. Photographs no larger that 4” x 6”
    8. Newspaper articles and pages from books or magazines
    9. Payroll checks, Personal checks, Third party checks
    10. Papers with non postage materials to include: oils, chemicals, liquid or foreign matter
    11. Materials depicting sexual activity or displaying male/female genitalia or females breasts
    12. Material that would, if communicated create a danger to the security of he facility, to include but is not limited to gang activity, gang graffiti, or tagging
    13. Material that may cause a severe psychiatric or emotional disturbance or distress as determined by staff
    14. Information, which if communicated, could create serious danger, violence, and/or harm to any person.
    15. Mail containing drawings or writings made of colored crayons, colored pencils, markers or other foreign substances.
  2. Insufficient postage
  3. Homemade envelopes
  4. No return address on the mailing

 

Mail will be rejected under the following reasons:

  1. If there is a reasonable suspicion that the correspondence may contain the following:
    1. Plans for criminal activity
    2. Instruction for the manufacture of weapons, drugs, drug paraphernalia or alcoholic beverages
    3. Codes not understood by the scanner, to include gang graffiti or "tagging"
    4. Plans for activities in violation of Facility Rules
    5. The promotion of racial discord
    6. The detailed construction of weapons, explosives, or incendiary devices
    7. Materials that would disrupt the operation and/or safety of the Facility
    8. Gang-related materials
